Nittany Lions and Aggies to play for Progressive Legends Classic title

Texas A&M and Penn State advanced in resounding fashion to Tuesday’s Championship Game of the Progressive Legends Classic at Barclays Center.

In the first of the two semifinal doubleheaders, Texas A&M limited Oklahoma State to just 30 percent shooting from the field and 13 percent from three in taking a 72-55 decision.

Offensively, D.J. Hogg scored 18 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Aggies. Tonny Trocha-Morelos had 12 points, Robert Williams had 11 points and nine rebounds, and Admon Gilder tallied 10 points.

However, the story of the game was Texas A&M’s defense, that stifled the Cowboys throughout the game.

Brandon Averette was the lone Cowboy to net double figures as he scored 10 points. Tavarius Shine and Lindy Waters had eight points each with Shine also hauling down eight rebounds. Jeffrey Carroll in his season debut had four points on 2-of-12 shooting.

In the nightcap, Penn State placed six players in double figures in earning an 85-54 victory over in-state rival Pittsburgh.

Tony Carr led the Nittany Lions with 16 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists. Shep Garner and Mike Watkins scored 13 points apiece, and Lamar Stevens and Nazeer Bostick had 10 points each with Stevens also accumulating eight rebounds.

The Nittany Lions held the Panthers to just 31 percent shooting from the floor. Jared Wilson-Frame was the lone Pitt player to score in double digits, netting a game-best 17 points.

Penn State and Texas A&M will meet for the Progressive Legends Classic at 6:00pm (ET) at Barclays Center on Tuesday. The game will be preceded by Pittsburgh vs. Oklahoma State at 3:30pm (ET).

In Subregional Round action in Malibu, Montana and UCSB will play for the title.

Montana advanced with a 69-64 win over Oral Roberts. Ahmaad Rorie led the Griz with 18 points and six assists. Michael Oguine had 14 points and six rebounds and Karl Nichols tallied 11 points

Oral Roberts received Austin Rider posted 19 points and five rebounds while Sean Kearns had 10 points.

UCSB moved on to play in the title game with a 92-84 win over host Pepperdine.

Max Heidegger had 24 points to lead the Gauchos, who also received 19 points and seven rebounds from Leland King II. Marcus Jackson had 16 points and five assists, Jalen Canty recorded 13 points and eight assists, and Gabe Vincent had 14 points.

Pepperdine was paced by the 27-point effort of Kameron Edwards. Colby Ross scored 25 points and Trae Berhow added 10 points.

Montana and UCSB will meet for the Subregional title at 8:00pm (ET) on Tuesday, followed by the Oral Roberts-Pepperdine consolation match.
