UMass survives scare, beats NC A&T 65-59

AMHERST, Mass. Donte Clark scored 22 points and handed out six assist as UMass outlasted North Carolina A&T, 65-59, in the Gotham Classic.

NC A&T jumped out to a 20-3 lead to start the game before the Minutemen put together a 19-2 run to close the first half trailing 31-30. The Aggies maintained their lead until Zach Lewis’ layup with 6:02 remaining gave UMass a temporary 52-51 lead. Davaris McGowens scored on a layup 41 seconds later to put NC A&T up 53-52. Then with 4:27 to go, Luwane Pipkins nailed a 3-pointer to give the Minutemen a 55-53 lead they would not relinquish.

Pipkins ended the game with 11 points and five assists. C.J. Anderson added nine points and eight rebounds as UMass improved to 7-3 on the season.

NC A&T (1-8) received 16 points from Sam Hunt, 12 points from Raymon Pratt, 11 points and eight rebounds from McGowens, and 10 points and six assists from Eliel Gonzalez.

The Gotham Classic resumes on Wednesday with Rider hosting Kennesaw State. NC A&T next plays on Thursday at Pacific. UMass will play on Saturday when it hosts Kennesaw State.
