Utah Valley opens 2019 Roman CBI with a win

The 12th annual Roman College Basketball Invitational got underway on Tuesday with Utah Valley winning at home, 92-84, over CSUN.

The Wolverines, who advanced to the 2017 CBI semifinals, were led by Baylee Steele (pictured), who posted 19 points and 16 rebounds – the latter tying for the seventh-highest single game total in CBI history. Jake Toolson paced UVU with 21 points while Isaiah White and Richard Harward netted 15 points apiece with Harward also hauling down eight rebounds.

The Matadors were led by Lamine Diane and his 27 points and seven rebounds. Terrell Gomez tallied 22 points and Elijah Harkless recorded 13 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.

The game was won at the foul line as the Wolverines were 29-of-37 while CSUN was 13-of-20. Utah Valley also outrebound the Matadors, 49-34.

Utah Valley advances to play the winner of Wednesday night’s Stony Brook-South Florida match-up in Tampa.

The Roman CBI continues on Wednesday with the remaining seven First Round games: beginning at 7:00pm (ET), West Virginia hosts Grand Canyon, Stony Brook is at South Florida, Coastal Carolina is home to Howard, Southern Miss travels to Longwood, and UAB is at Brown. At 8:00pm (ET), DePaul hosts Central Michigan. At 10:30pm (ET), Loyola Marymount is at California Baptist.

The eight winners will advance to Monday’s Quarterfinal Round. Sites for those games will be announced after Wednesday’s games are completed.
