CBI Semifinal Round Matchups Determined

Ohio, Nevada, Morehead, State and Vermont each advanced to the semifinals of the 2016 College Basketball Invitational.

In Athens, Ohio, Ohio trailed 62-47 with just 7:45 to play in the game before closing with a 25-5 run to defeat UNCG, 72-67.

Ohio led 17-16 7:15 into the game and did not take the lead again until Jordan Dartis’ three-pointer with 2:41 to play put the Bobcats up, 65-64. Ohio took the lead for good with 24 seconds left when Dartis hit another three-pointer to make it a 70-67 ballgame.

Dartis ended the game with 14 points for Ohio (23-11), who was led by the 19-point, eight-assist effort of Jaaron Simmons. Antonio Campbell had 17 points and a CBI record 19 rebounds (his 17 defensive rebounds were also a record) and Treg Setty had 12 points and six boards.

Diante Baldwin led UNCG (15-19) with 17 points. Marvin Smith scored 16 points and RJ White had 11 points.

The Bobcats will host Morehead State in the CBI semifinals on Wednesday.

In Morehead, Ky., Brent Arrington scored 17 points to lead Morehead State to an 82-72 win over Duquesne.

The Eagles led for the majority of the game, including at halftime when Arrington’s midcourt bomb at the buzzer put them up 43-36. MSU never trailed in the second half and never saw its lead get inside seven points in the final nine minutes of the game.

Xavier Moon tallied 15 points, DeJuan Marrerro had 14 points and eight rebounds, and Corbin Collins added 10 points and six assists as Morehead State improved to 21-12 on the season.

Duquesne (17-17) was paced by Micah Mason and his 24 points and five assists. Derrick Colter netted 16 points.

In Reno, Nev., Tyron Criswell and Cameron Oliver combined for 60 points and 22 rebounds to lead Nevada to an 85-70 win over Eastern Washington.

Criswell posted 32 points and eight rebounds while Oliver had 28 points and 14 caroms as the Wolf Pack (21-13) overcame a 45-43 halftime deficit to outscore EWU 42-25 in the second half and advance to the CBI semifinals on Wednesday.

Eastern Washington (18-16) played without star player Venky Jois, who injured his knee in the Eagles’ win last Wednesday. Felix Von Hofe led Eastern with 20 points, Austin McBroom had 17 points, seven assists, and six rebounds, and Julian Harrell added 15 points.

Nevada will host Vermont on Wednesday.

In Seattle, Wash., Vermont earned its second trip in as many years to the CBI semifinals with a 73-54 win at Seattle.

Vermont’s (23-13) Kurt Steidl led all scorers with 17 points. Trae Bell Haynes posted 16 points and six rebounds, Darren Payne had 14 points and six boards, and Ernie Duncan added 14 points.

Seattle (15-17) was led by Brendan Westendorf with 16 points and six rebounds while Jack Crook had 12 points and seven rebounds.

Last year, the Catamounts lost at Louisiana Monroe in the semis, 71-65.
