Notre Dame, Creighton, IUPUI and Furman Advance to Kansas City

Princeton, NJ (November 20, 2002) - Notre Dame, Creighton, IUPUI and Furman advanced to the championship rounds of the Guardians Classic at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. Creighton will play IUPUI and Notre Dame will face Furman in the semifinal rounds on Monday, November 25th. Monday night's winners will meet in the championship game on Tuesday night, November 26th. Game times for both nights are 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. (CST).

Notre Dame won its regional bracket by defeating Belmont 76-48 in the opener and IUPUI 89-45 in the regional title game. Notre Dame Senior Guard Matt Carroll won Regional MVP honors averaging 20.5 points per game. Sophomore guard Chris Thomas averaged 9.5 assists per game and sophomore forward Jordan Cornette recorded 19 blocked shots over the two days. IUPUI won its first game over Brown 66-65 to advance as the number two seed from the Notre Dame bracket.

Creighton won its regional bracket by defeating Texas-Arlington 106-50 in the opener and Furman 89-57 in the regional title game. As a team, the Bluejays shot 57% from the floor and 52.3% from behind the expanded 3-point arc, increased to 20 feet, 6 inches during the event. Senior forward Kyle Korver took home the Regional MVP honors shooting 11 of 15 on 3-point attempts while averaging 19 points per game. Furman defeated Alabama State 74-73 in the opener to advance to Kansas City as the number two seed from the Creighton bracket.
