2004 Guardians Classic Tournament Preview

Princeton, NJ (November 11, 2004) – The 2004 Guardians Classic, an exempt college basketball tournament, is set to tip off next Monday and Tuesday at Missouri, Creighton and Ohio State. The event features twelve teams from twelve different conferences and ten states across the country. The following chart provides some basic information on each program:

Did you know?
• Last season Brown's Jason Forte became the first player in Ivy League history to lead the league in both scoring and assists.

• Tom Penders returns to the bench after a three year break from coaching. Coach Penders, known for his success in rapidly rebuilding teams into winning programs, has spent time at Texas, Rhode Island and George Washington. While at Rhode Island Coach Penders defeated Missouri in the first round of the NCAA tournament in 1988.
• Creighton's Tyler McKinney missed the final 18 games due to a viral eye infections. The Bluejays were 10-0 with McKinney and 10-9 without him.
• Jeff Ruland was an All-American at Iona in 1980.
• Thad Matta won the regular season and conference tournament champoinship in the same year twice. He did it in 2000-01 at Butler and 2001-02 at Xavier, both seasons he was named conference coach of the year.
• In his 25th season as a head coach, Pat Kennedy has compiled 416 wins and is tied for 19th with Rick Pitino of Louisville for the most wins for an active head coach in Division I.
