Beilein Picks Up Milestone Win in Victory over Gardner-Webb

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan men's basketball head coach John Beilein picked up his 600th win as a head coach and four players scored in double figures as the Wolverines cruised to an 80-58 win over Gardner-Webb in the second game of the Legends Classic Ann Arbor regional on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 21) insideCrislerArena.
Sophomore Darius Morris (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward) set a career high with 21 points and had 10 assists, giving him double-digit assists for the second straight contest. He was 8-of-10 from the floor and was perfect from three-point range (2-of-2) and the free-throw line (3-of-3). Sophomore/freshman Jordan Morgan (Detroit, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) also had a career high with 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting and pulled down eight rebounds. Freshman Tim Hardaway Jr. (Miami, Fla./Palmetto Senior) and junior Stu Douglass (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) had 15 and 10 points, respectively as the Wolverines remained perfect on the young season.
The Wolverines had as much as a 25-point lead while forcing Gardner-Webb into 12 first-half turnovers, taking a 41-19 lead into the halftime break. Morgan scored six of the Maize and Blue's first eight points of the game, as his jumper at 16:17 gave U-M an early 8-4 lead. The lead stretched to 11-4 on an old-fashion three-point play fromHardawayat 14:21. Morris' jumper as the shot clock expired gave Michigan a 13-6 lead. Gardner-Webb's Stefan Johnson cut U-M's lead to 20-11 with a layup at 6:38, but the Wolverines answered with a 10-0 run, capped byHardaway'srunner in the lane at 3:43.Hardaway, who ended the half with 13 points, hit a three from the corner and Douglass followed with a runner at 2:15 to make it 35-14 Michigan.Hardawaygave the Maize and Blue its largest lead in the first 20 minutes as he hit a jumper with 37 seconds left to make the score 41-16.
Morgan started the second half much like the first, scoring on layups on back-to-back possessions. Morris hit a three-pointer to give U-M a 48-23 lead, forcing the Runnin' Bulldogs to call a timeout. Gardner-Webb cut the lead to 53-33 on a three from BrianMcNair, but that would be as close as it would get. Michigan extended its lead to as high as 31 points on a Morris score at 9:45.
Michigan shot 52.4 percent (33-of-63) from the floor and had a 45-23 rebounding advantage. Fifteen of those rebounds were on the offensive glass, which led to 12 second-chance points.
Garnder-Webb was led byMcNair's14 points, while Luke Davis had six assists.
Beileinnow has a 600-371 record in 33 seasons as a head coach. The win was his 49th at Michigan and he now has 525 NCAA victories, which ranks 17th among active Division I head coaches.
The Maize and Blue return to the hardwood Friday (Nov. 25) as it starts the championship round of the 2010 Legends Classic at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. Michigan faces Syracuse at 8 p.m. EST with the game televised onHDNet.
