
Florida got 29 points from Kenny Boynton in winning the third annual Legends Classic with a 71-58 win over Rutgers at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall.
Erving Walker had 11 points and five assists and was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Teammate Vernon Macklin garnered all-tournament honors after posting 14 points and eight rebounds. As a team, the Gators (6-0) shot 32-61 (.525) from the field and scored 46 points in the paint.
Rutgers (3-2) was paced by tournament team selection Mike Rosario and his 14 points and team-high six rebounds. Hamady Ndiaye added 12 points.
In the consolation game, second-ranked Michigan State exploded for a 106-68 win over Massachusetts. The Spartans (5-1) placed five players in double figures, led by the 18-point effort of Chris Allen. Raymar Morgan netted 17 points, all-tournament team selection Kalin Lucas scored 16 points, Korie Lucious added 13 points, and Delvon Roe had 11 points.
UMass (2-4) was led by Anthony Gurley, who scored 24 points en route to all-tournament team honors. Ricky Harris added 15 points.
At the Statesboro, Ga., Subregional, Georgia Southern, Troy, and Valparaiso all posted 2-1 records while Arkansas-Fort Smith went 0-3. Willie Powers of Georgia Southern was named the Subregional's MVP. He was joined on the all-subregional team by teammate Antonio Hanson, Troy's Brandon Hazzard, Josh Simmons of Arkansas-Fort Smith, and Brandon Wood of Valparaiso.
In Philadelphia, Cornell was a perfect 3-0 to go 4-0 overall against Legends Classic competition. Drexel was 2-1, Vermont went 1-2, and Toledo was 0-3. Cornell's Ryan Wittman was tabbed MVP of the Subregional. Fellow Big Red Jon Jaques, Toledo's Jake Barnett, Jamie Harris of Drexel, and Vermont's Marqus Blakely joined Wittman on the all-subregional team.
