RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond men's basketball team will host St. John's in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Robins Center.
The winner of the Richmond/St. John's game would play the winner of Troy and the College of Charleston on March 23rd.
The Spiders (18-15) are playing in the CBI for the second-straight season and making their 16th postseason appearance, including the sixth in the last nine seasons.
The CBI field also includes Stanford, Oregon State and Houston.
Richmond has won three of the last four games and six of the last eight, including an 80-75 victory over No. 17 ranked Xavier, which is a No. 4 seed in the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
The Red Storm (16-17, 6-12 Big East) have won three of the last five and four of the last seven, including two wins over Georgetown in the month of March. Paris Horne leads the team in scoring at 14.8 points per game and D.J. Kennedy is second among active players at 12.8 ppg.
Richmond is 0-3 all-time against St. John's, all coming between 1954 and 1959. This will be St. John's second time playing the Spiders in Richmond, having picked up a 73-67 in Richmond Arena on Feb. 25, 1958.
Chris Mooney is 2-3 against Big East teams in his four seasons at Richmond.
The Spiders have the most victories (18) since the 2003-04 NCAA team won 20 games. Despite missing 2008 Third-Team All-Atlantic 10 selection Dan Geriot for the entire season due to a torn ACL, Richmond finished fifth in the Atlantic 10, posting its second-straight top-5 conference finish. Only Xavier, Temple, Saint Joseph's and Richmond have finished in fifth place or better in the Atlantic 10 in each of the past two seasons.
Last season, the Spiders lost to Virginia 66-64 in Charlottesville in the first round of the CBI. |
