FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior David Gonzalvez tied a career-high with 25 points as Richmond defeated Florida Gulf Coast 69-58 on Monday night in the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic.

Gonzalvez scored 13 points in the first half and 12 in the second, making 7-of-11 shots from the field and 9-of-11 free throws. He equaled his 25-point effort against eventual national runner-up Memphis last November.

"David was terrific," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "He scored in a variety of ways, he was able to get the free throw line, he was aggressive, he went to the basket, he scored in the post, he scored on drives and in transition."

Sophomore Kevin Anderson was hampered by foul trouble, picking up two fouls just 39 seconds into the game, but he still finished with 14 points and two steals. Sophomore Kevin Smith scored 10 points, for his second-straight game in double-figures. He also had two assists, a block and three steals.

Richmond senior Jarhon Giddings scored eight points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds.

"Jarhon was great on the boards," Mooney said. "He really pulled down some big rebounds for us."

The Spiders out-rebounded FGCU 34-29 and had 22 points off turnovers.

Delvin Franklin scored 17 points, making four three-pointers to lead the Eagles (1-2). Derrick Neal scored 14 points and Kyle Marks had 11.

Richmond (2-1) will play UMKC on Tuesday at 5 p.m. The Kangeroos defeated Bradley 73-61 in the opening game Monday night at Alico Arena.
