Missouri Tops Maryland,

Tigers Take Third
in CBE Classic
box score
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Leo Lyons had 23 points
and 11 rebounds, and Missouri swarmed Maryland
into numerous mistakes for an 84-70 victory
over the Terrapins on Tuesday night in the consolation
game of the CBE Classic.
Missouri (4-1) twice rallied from double-digit
leads in the semifinals against No. 10 Michigan
State, using their frenetic defense to rattle
the Spartans into 17 turnovers. The Tigers'
pressure had the same effect early against Maryland,
which had 12 turnovers in the first half, including
two at the start of a 10-0 run that put Missouri
up 39-29.
Darryl Butterfield hit some big shots after
leading scorer DeMarre Carroll went out with
foul trouble. Butterfield finished with 11 points.
Carroll also had 11, but played just 15 minutes,
four in the second half.
Maryland (3-2) never made it all the way back
from the early deficit thanks to all the turnovers,
finishing with 22 that led to 28 points for
Missouri.
It didn't help that the Terps had another rough
night shooting from the outside.
Maryland 1-for-15 from 3-point range, barely
extending its streak of making at least one
3-pointer to 290 games when Landon Milbourne
dropped one in with 22 seconds. Eric Hayes was
the only player to make a 3-pointer against
UCLA in the semifinals, when he made one with
26 seconds left on a 1-for-11 night for the
Terps.
Missouri didn't fare much better. The Tigers
shot 3-of-18 from beyond the arc, many of the
misses coming on wide-open looks. Matt Lawrence,
Missouri's best 3-point shooter a year ago at
44 percent, had the worst of it, going 1-for-7.
After watching Carroll take just two shots
in the first half against Michigan State, Missouri
coach Mike Anderson said he needed to find ways
of getting him the ball.
It took Anderson less than 24 hours to follow
through, running most of the early offense through
Carroll. And the junior forward was much more
aggressive than against Michigan State, posting
up hard or driving hard to the basket on nearly
every touch, scoring eight points in the game's
first 5 1/2 minutes.
Then Carroll got in foul trouble. He sat the
final 7 minutes of the first half after picking
up his second foul and started the second with
two quick fouls, his fourth coming four minutes
in on a reach-in with Butterfield at the scorer's
table ready to replace him.
Carroll returned with 2:52 left in the game
and fouled out 33 seconds later.
Lyons picked up the slack when Carroll was
out in the first half, starting a 10-0 run with
a three-point play and finishing the first half
with 13 points. |
