
Five players scored in double figures as No. 3 Texas (4-0) pulled away in the second half to emerge with a 78-62 win over Pittsburgh to capture the O’Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic in Kansas City.
Tournament MVP Damion James led all scorers with 20 points to go along with a team-best nine rebounds. J’Covan Brown tallied 12 points, Dexter Pittman had 10 points, as did Avery Bradley. Dogus Balbay added 10 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists.
With the score tied at 51 with 10:48 to go in the game, the Longhorns went on a 14-3 run over the next 4:24 to take a 65-54 lead that they would not relinquish.
Pitt (4-1) was led by the 13-point, six-rebound effort of Brad Wanamaker. Gary McGhee had 11 points and 10 rebounds to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.
In the consolation game, Toure’Murry and Garrett Stutz tallied 18 points apiece as Wichita State (3-1) downed Iowa, 74-57. Graham Hatch joined the duo in double figures with 14 points.
Iowa (1-4) was led by Cully Payne and his 18 points.
Joining James and McGhee on the all-tournament team were Pittman, Murry, and Payne.
In Subregional action, Western Carolina went a perfect 3-0 in the Cullowhee, N.C. Subregional. Duquesne was 2-1, Binghamton went 1-2, and Arkansas-Monticello was 0-3. Western Carolina's Mike Williams garnered Subregional MVP laurels. He was joined on the all-subregional team by teammate Jake Robinson, Bill Clark of Duquesne, Binghamton's Greer Wright, and Gil Verner of Arkansas-Monticello.
In Richmond, Ky., UTSA was 3-0 in going 4-0 overall in the event. Eastern Kentucky was 2-1, UC Irvine was 1-2, and Fairleigh Dickinson went 0-3. Justin Stommes of Eastern Kentucky was honored as the Subregional MVP. Teammate Josh Taylor, Sean Baptiste of FDU, UTSA's Devin Gibson, and Eric Wise of UC Irvine joined Stommes on the all-subregional squad.
