Texas Win on Second Night of AT&T Wireless Coaches vs. Cancer
Classic
Princeton,
NJ (November 15, 2002) – College basketball’s
premier preseason event came to a conclusion Friday night and fans
across the country were not disappointed. Marquette and Texas left
Madison Square Garden victorious as the 2002 AT&T Wireless Coaches
vs. Cancer Classic concluded in New York on Friday night.
In the first
game, preseason All-America Dwayne Wade led the Marquette Golden
Eagles to a victory over the Villanova Wildcats 73-61. Villanova’s
highly ranked freshmen class made their collective debut and Allan
Ray and Jason Fraser lived up to expectations with 16 and 13 points,
respectively.
Game 2 featured
some of the most athletic basketball players in the country. Texas
entered the game ranked No 4 in the country, the highest ranking
in school history. The Longhorns were led by guard T.J. Ford, the
2002 USBWA National Freshman of the Year, as they defeated the Georgia
Bulldogs 77-71. Damien Wilkins made his debut with the Bulldogs
a memorable one, finishing with 16 points, seven rebounds and four
assists.
Last year, the
Arizona Wildcats, then unranked, upset then No. 5 Florida on the
first night and then eventual National Champion Maryland in the
championship game of the tournament. Other past champions include
Kansas (2000), Stanford (1999) and Temple (1998).
The Coaches
vs. Cancer ® program, created by the American Cancer Society
and the National Association of Basketball Coaches exists to leverage
the strength, community leadership and celebrity of our country's
basketball coaches to raise awareness and in turn, reduce cancer
risk through education programs while raising funds for the American
Cancer Society.
