Alabama,
Memphis Open Season with Wins in New York City
Princeton,
NJ (November 14, 2002) -- The college basketball season
got underway Thursday night at the AT&T Wireless Coaches vs. Cancer
Classic in New York City.
In the opening
game of the doubleheader, the unranked Memphis Tigers began their
season with an upset, beating Syracuse 70-63. Freshman Jeremy Hunt
led the way with 19 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. ‘Cuse
freshman sensation Carmelo Anthony got his college career started
in a grand way, scoring 27 points (second most in Event history,
Chris Carawell scored 28 points vs. Stanford in 1999) and grabbing
11 rebounds.
In the nightcap,
the eighth-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide defeated the third-ranked
Oklahoma Sooners 68-62. Super Soph Mo Williams paced the Tide with
25 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Seniors Ebi Ere and
Hollis Price led the Sooners with 24 and 19 points each, respectively.

Both games will
be televised nationally on ESPN2.
Last season,
the Arizona Wildcats, then unranked, upset both No. 5 Florida and
No.3 Maryland on consecutive nights to be crowned the Coaches vs.
Cancer Classic champions. Other past champions include Kansas (2000),
Stanford (1999) and Temple (1998).
