Gardner Webb Advances to Championship Rounds of the
2K Sports College Hoops Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer

PRINCETON, N.J. – After a stunning upset, Gardner Webb advances to the Championship Rounds of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer by knocking off #22 ranked Kentucky in Rupp Arena last night by a score of 84-68. The Runnin’ Bulldogs will travel to Madison Square Garden to take on the winner of tonight’s match-up between Buffalo and Connecticut in Storrs, Connecticut. (Click here for an updated bracket).

Just a few months after Appalachian State knocked off Michigan at home in football, Gardner Webb pulls off an upset of equal stature to begin the college basketball season, routing the Wildcats on their home court. Gardner Webb led the entire game and never had a lead of less than seven points. "A lot of people will think this is a misprint, but I hope not," Gardner-Webb coach Rick Scruggs said. "I hope they get to see it and can enjoy it. It's going to take a few days to settle in."

Coach Rick Scruggs has been in a similar position before. In 2001 Dick Vitale called Colorado State’s schedule “Cupcake City” because of their match-up with the Runnin’ Bulldogs. Scruggs went on to lead his team to a victory against Colorado State and sent a batch of cupcakes to the ESPN commentator.

Gardner Webb’s upset is reminiscent of St. Mary’s upset of Cal in the 2004 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. Playing in the Championship Rounds at Madison Square Garden propelled St. Mary’s on to a 25-9 overall record, earning an at large bid in the NCAA Tournament.
