Coaches
vs. Cancer Challenge to Feature Nations Top Teams in 2001
Princeton,
NJ (April 4, 2001) The Gazelle Group is pleased to announce
the field and dates for the 2001 Coaches vs. Cancer Challenge. Iowa
State will host DePaul, Maryland and Mississippi State in Ames,
IA on November 21-23, 2001. Match-ups will be announced on or around
July 1, 2001.
The event will
feature two time Kodak All-American LaToya Thomas of Mississippi
State and District 5 Kodak All-American Angie Welle of Iowa State,
two of the top post players in the nation.
This week, Notre
Dame became the second straight winner of the Coaches vs. Cancer
Challenge to also win the NCAA championship.
Notre Dame,
who defeated Georgia 75-73 in the 2000 Coaches vs. Cancer Challenge
championship game, won the NCAA championship Monday night over Purdue,
host of the 2002 Coaches vs. Cancer Challenge to win its first ever
national crown.
UConn, who defeated
Old Dominion 109-66 to win the inaugural Coaches vs. Cancer Challenge
Championship Game in 1999, won its second national championship
later that season with a victory over Tennessee 71-52 on April 2,
2000.
The Coaches
vs. Cancer tournament has become the nations most prestigious
event, says Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly. It
is for a great cause and I know we will have outstanding games here
at Hilton Coliseum, which has become one of the best environments
for college basketball in the country.

The Coaches
vs. Cancer® program created by the American Cancer Society,
the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the Womens
Basketball Coaches Association exists to leverage the strength,
community leadership and celebrity of our countrys basketball
coaches to raise awareness and in turn, reduce cancer risk through
education programs while raising funds for the American Cancer Society.
Founded in
1981, the Womens Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) promotes
womens basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop
a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the
development of the game in all aspects as an amateur sport for winners
and girls.
