This week, Notre Dame became the second straight winner of the Coaches vs. Cancer Challenge to also win the NCAA championship.

Notre Dame, who defeated Georgia 75-73 in the 2000 Coaches vs. Cancer Challenge championship game, won the NCAA championship Monday night over Purdue, host of the 2002 Coaches vs. Cancer Challenge to win its first ever national crown.

UConn, who defeated Old Dominion 109-66 to win the inaugural Coaches vs. Cancer Challenge Championship Game in 1999, won its second national championship later that season with a victory over Tennessee 71-52 on April 2, 2000.

“The Coaches vs. Cancer tournament has become the nation’s most prestigious event,” says Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly. “It is for a great cause and I know we will have outstanding games here at Hilton Coliseum, which has become one of the best environments for college basketball in the country.”

Tickets are on sale now, and may be purchased by calling 1-888-ISU-CYCLONE or by visiting the Iowa State box office in Hilton Coliseum.

The Coaches vs. Cancer® program created by the American Cancer Society, the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association exists to leverage the strength, community leadership and celebrity of our country’s basketball coaches to raise awareness and in turn, reduce cancer risk through education programs while raising funds for the American Cancer Society.

Founded in 1981, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) promotes women’s basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game in all aspects as an amateur sport for winners and girls.
