Rutgers defeats FDU in OT for Waters' first victory
Wildcats go 2-1 to take third place at BCA Invitational

RALEIGH, N.C. - Jerome Coleman scored 21 points to lead Rutgers in a 70-66 overtime victory against Fairleigh Dickinson in the seventh-place game of the Black Coaches Association Invitational on Friday.

Coleman hit a 3-pointer early in overtime and Mike Sherrod hit two free throws that put Rutgers (1-2) up by four with 4.7 seconds to play in overtime. Coleman made 4 of 9 tries from 3-point range.

Fairleigh Dickinson (0-3) rallied from a 15-point deficit in the second half and tied it at 59 on a jump shot by Doug Whitler with 14 seconds left. Iman Mattox led the Knights with 19 points and seven rebounds.

Rutgers opened the second half with a 17-4 run, capped by consecutive putbacks from Eugene Dabney that put the Scarlet Knights up 44-29 with 15:47 left.

Fairleigh Dickinson pulled within 52-50 with 4:33 left after a 17-4 run, and Rutgers had a series of mistakes down the stretch to keep the Knights in it.
Rashod Kent was called for a intentional foul when he grabbed Marcus Whitaker, then was whistled for another foul on a jump ball after Sherrod was tied up in the corner. The sequence led to five points for Fairleigh Dickinson and allowed the Knights to pull within 58-57 with 33 seconds left.
Rutgers was also just 1-for-5 from the free throw line in the final 4:40, including two misses on the front end of a 1-and-1. The Scarlet Knights were 13-for-21 overall from the line.
Whitler made the tying shot after Ricky Shields made one of two free throws with 30 seconds left. Sherrod missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer.
