Players
to Watch at the 2001 BCA Classic
Tulane's
Patrick Ramsey and BYU's Justin Ena prepare for opener
Princeton,
N.J. (August 22, 2001) Brigham
Young and Tulane will kick-off the college football season at the
fifth annual BCA Classic on August 25th at 4:30 p.m. EST in BYUs
LaVell Edwards Stadium. ESPN2 will nationally televise the game.
Last year, Tulane's
Patrick Ramsey threw for 300 or more yards in six games, including
each of the last four. He led Conference USA in total offense with
an average of 288.6 yards per game, while completing 58.9 percent
of his passes for 2,833 yards and 24 touchdowns. Building off his
tremendous 2000 season, Ramsey is poised to be one of the top quarterbacks
in the nation and should be in contention for several post-season
awards, including All-American.
Patrick
has God-given ability. But his toughness, his ability to play in
pain and his work-ethic sets him apart, says offensive coordinator
Frank Scelfo (the older brother of head coach Chris Scelfo).
Ramseys
favorite target this season figures to be senior receiver Terrell
Harris, who finished last season with a career-high 64 receptions
for 694 yards. Also, look for sophomore running back Mewelde Moore,
a Freshman All-American in 2000, to help balance Tulanes attack.
On the other
side of the ball, middle linebacker Justin Ena will headline a talented
group of BYU linebackers. The 6' 3", 260-pound Ena is regarded
as one of the best LBs in the country and has already been
placed on the Rotary Butkus Award Watch. He led BYU in tackles and
forced fumbles last year and combined with fellow backers Isaac
Kelley and Paul Welkenhorst for a total of 218 tackles including
34 tackles for a net loss of 132 yards. Ena received All-Mountain
West Conference honors in 2000.
These
three guys are going to be good, head coach Gary Crowton explains.
(They) are experienced and bring a lot to the defense. We
expect they will be the key to our defense.
