2002 – Huskers Scorch Sun Devils in Season Opener

Nebraska scored a pair of touchdowns just 1:42 apart in the third quarter to break open a seven-point game, as the eighth-ranked Huskers opened the 2002 season with a 48-10 victory over Arizona State in the Black Coaches Association Classic. Nebraska's special teams blocked a pair of punts that led to a pair of touchdowns and a suffocating defense recorded four sacks and allowed one Sun Devil touchdown. Husker quarterback Jammal Lord picked up his first career 100-yard rushing day, carrying 17 times for 103 yards, while also completing five-of-13 passes for 35 yards and a touchdown.

2001 – Doman, Cougar Offense Blow Past Green Wave

Brandon Doman was 25-of-31 for 286 yards and three touchdowns in Gary Crowton’s debut as BYU’s head coach, leading the Cougars to a 70-35 victory over Tulane. BYU’s rushing attack, which produced 437 of the Cougars’ 734 yards, set the tempo and wore down the Green Wave. Luke Staley ran for 142 yards and Brian McDonald had 103, each scoring three touchdowns. Doman also ran for a touchdown and 116 yards, earning the BCA Classic Most Valuable Player award.

2000 - Lightning Strikes the “Battle of the Techs”

As Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech lined up for the opening kickoff, a bolt of lightning struck Lane Stadium, postponing the much-anticipated season opener.

1999 - N.C. State Upends No. 17 Texas
N.C. State 23, Texas 20
Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium • Attendance: 82,582

Despite yielding just 172 yards of total offense to a high-powered Wolfpack attack, the 17th-ranked Longhorns were upset by N.C. State 23-20 before a record season-opening crowd. Wolfpack freshman Terrence Holt spearheaded a huge special teams effort by recording two of N.C. State’s three blocked punts, a pair of which resulted in touchdowns and another in a safety.

1998 - Colorado State Wins First Ever Game vs. Big Ten

Behind 205 passing yards from Ryan Eslinger and 82 rushing yards from Kevin McDougal the Colorado State Rams won their fifth straight season opener under Coach Sonny Lubick. The Rams went down 16-0 midway through the second quarter but rallied for 23 unanswered points while holding the Spartan offense scoreless for the final 37 minutes of the game.

1997 - Buckeyes Win Season Opener

Ohio Stadium, ‘’The Horseshoe’’ • Attendance: 89,112

Stanley Jackson ran for one touchdown and threw for another, and Michael Wiley came off the bench to rush for a game-high 121 yards as Ohio State downed visiting Wyoming 24-10 in the inaugural BCA Classic. Dee Miller put the Buckeyes up 24-3 in the second half with a 45-yard touchdown grab, and Ohio State continued its dominance in season openers, winning for the 11th consecutive year overall and 19th straight time at home.
