COLUMBUS, Ohio - Four players scored in double figures and Loyola University Chicago (1-0) hit 59 percent of its field goal attempts en route to a 68-57 victory over Princeton (0-1) at Value City Arena tonight in a first-round game at the Black Coaches Association Classic. With the win, Loyola, which dominated the battle of the boards, 33-14, improves to 3-0 in season openers under head coach Jim Whitesell.
"I thought we did a good job on the offensive boards," Whitesell said. "When we moved the ball, J.R. (Blount) had some good dribble-drive. This was a very good team win."
The first half was a see-saw affair and was knotted up at 21-21 before Loyola closed the period with a 8-3 run to take a 29-24 lead at the break. After the Ramblers hit the first bucket of the second half to open up a 31-24 advantage, Luke Owings and Kyle Koncz hit back-to-back three-pointers to draw the Tigers within a point, at 31-30. However, Tracy Robinson's three-pointer with 16:27 left in regulation ignited an 8-0 Rambler run that gave Loyola control of the contest.
Cortney Horton's conventional three-point play with 2:52 remaining gave Loyola its largest lead of the game, 62-47.
Leon Young, who was impressive in the season opener at IPFW a year ago, tossed in 12 points and hauled in seven boards for the Ramblers, while Blount also chipped in 12 points. Robinson, starting in place of the suspended Majak Kou, dropped in a career-best 10 points, and Andy Polka, making his collegiate debut, contributed 10 points and seven boards in only 17 minutes off the bench. Blake Schilb grabbed six boards and doled out a game-high five assists, but was limited to six points, snapping a 21-game double-figure scoring streak.
Loyola advances to the semifinal round of the BCA Classic, where it will face either Ohio State or VMI tomorrow.
