Mavericks edge out the Lumberjacks

SEATTLE –
Jarrett Howell scored 19 points, and Texas-Arlington used a 14-1
run midway through the second half for a 68-59 win over Northern
Arizona in a consolation game at the Black Coaches Association tournament
on Monday.
Howell scored
11 in the second half, nine during the Mavericks' run, as Texas-Arlington
(1-1) won despite going the last 9:54 without making a field goal.
Brandon Long
scored 10 points off the bench for Texas-Arlington, all in the first
half, and Myles Guidry and Steven Thomas both added nine.
Northern Arizona
was led by the 14 points of Kelly Golob, and the 11 of Tyrone Bazy.
The Lumberjacks
(0-2) led 50-48 with 12:41 left after Ryan McCurdy scored. From
there, Northern Arizona went nearly seven minutes before making
another shot, getting just one free throw each from Ruben Boykin,
Jr., and Will Hensley.
The Mavericks
took the lead 51-50 on Howell's third 3-pointer, followed by a 3-pointer
from Brady Dawkins and a driving layup by Howell.
Texas-Arlington
turned up its defensive pressure, forcing turnovers on three straight
possessions, and got a layup from Howell and a dunk from Thomas
to extend its lead to 60-50 with 9:53 left. Howell pushed the lead
to 62-51 with a pair of free throws, before Bazy's jumper with 5:58
left broke the Lumberjacks' shooting slump.
Northern Arizona
got within 64-58, but Steven Sir's missed 3-pointer with 1:20 left
ended hopes of a comeback. The Mavericks scored their final eight
points at the free throw line, four in the final minute.
Texas-Arlington
managed just 37 shot attempts, hampered by 27 turnovers. But, the
Mavericks shot 54 percent, and outscored the Lumberjacks 21-15 at
the free-throw line.
Northern Arizona
led 36-34 at halftime, but made just 7-of-25 shots in the second
half.
