clenches fifth place

SEATTLE –
UNC-Greensboro ended the game with a 20-7 run in the final 4:25
and got 19 points and 12 rebounds from sophomore forward Kyle Hines
to beat Texas-Arlington 61-49 for fifth place in the Black Coaches
Association Classic on Tuesday.
The Spartans
(2-1) came back after losing an 11-point lead in the second half.
They led 33-22
with 3:55 gone in the second half, but the Mavericks (1-2) battled
back and led 42-41 after a three-point play by forward Steven Thomas
-- a short jump hook and a free throw after being fouled by Matt
Akinosho -- with 4:34 on the clock.
But then UNC-Greensboro
took charge, scoring 14 unanswered points to go in front 55-42 with
1:18 left. The muscular 6-foot-6, 230-pound Hines, who also blocked
three shots in 37 minutes, put the Spartans in front for good at
43-42 with an offensive rebound after a miss by Kevin Oleksiak with
4:25 to go.
Guard Ricky
Hickman's steal and dunk 14 seconds later, a short basket by Hines
and four free throws by Hickman put UNC-Greensboro ahead 53-42 with
2:34 remaining.
Texas-Arlington
was limited to four free throws by Anthony Vareen and a 3-pointer
by Jarrett Howell in the final 68 seconds.
Hickman had
14 points and Oleksiak 12 for UNC-Greensboro, which bounced back
to win two games in the tournament after losing to Wisconsin-Green
Bay 71-48 in the opening round on Sunday night.
Howell led the
Mavericks with 13 points, but shot only 3-for-11.
Texas-Arlington
had a dismal day shooting, going 14-for-55 -- 26 percent -- but
UNC Greensboro wasn't much better at 20-for-52 -- 39 percent. Hines
was 9-for-16 shooting.
The Spartans
led 21-17 at halftime, with Hines scoring nine of his points.
UNC-Greensboro
is favored to win the Southern Conference this season after going
18-12 last season, when Hines was the league's freshman of the year.
