UNC-Greensboro takes consolation game

SEATTLE – Southern Conference favorite UNC-Greensboro, led by athletic sophomore forward Kyle Hines' 18 points, beat Morgan State 62-49 in a consolation game in the Black Coaches Association tournament on Monday.

The 6-foot-6 Hines, from Sicklerville, N.C., added seven rebounds, three assists and four blocked shots in 34 minutes.

Sophomore guard Kevin Olesksiak had 12 points and 6-6 sophomore forward Brian Beckford added 10 points for the Spartans (1-1).

Trailing at halftime, the Bears (0-2) came out in the first 2:23 of the second half and took the lead at 28-27 on a 3-pointer by point guard Timothy Mathis and, offensive rebound putbacks by Marcus Gomes and Andrew Lee.

But UNC-Greensoboro coach Mike Dement called a quick timeout and it was all Spartans after that. They went on a 14-0 run, with Hines leading the way with eight points, to go ahead 43-28 with 9:54 on the clock.

Lee, a sophomore forward, led Morgan State with 19 points and junior guard Joseph McLean added 14.

In the opening half, the Spartans outscored the Bears 12-4 in the final 5:43 to grab a 27-21 halftime lead.

In April, Dement was rehired as the coach at UNC-Greensboro, where he coached from 1991 to 1995, after being fired at Southern Methodist, where he coached for nine seasons.

UNC-Greensboro lost to Wisconsin-Green Bay 71-48 in the opening round of the tournament, while Morgan State was overwhelmed by Washington 118-51.
