Helms' 27 lead Golden Grizzlies over Illinois-Chicago, 79-66

CINCINNATI - Mike Helms scored 27 points and Oakland recovered from a first-half lapse to beat Illinois-Chicago 79-66 on Sunday night in the semifinals of the Dell™ Black Coaches Association Classic.

Helms scored 21 in the second half, leading Oakland (2-0) to the championship game in the eight-team tournament played on Xavier's home court.

Illinois-Chicago (1-1) whittled a 14-point deficit to 39-38 in the first half, when Helms took only four shots. The lead changed hands six times early in the second half before Helms took over, hitting a 3-pointer that put the Golden Grizzlies ahead to stay 51-48.

Helms set a tournament record with 31 points in an opening 93-68 victory over San Diego. The senior guard went 10-of-23 from the field against Illinois-Chicago, which has five senior starters but couldn't figure out how to stop him.

Rawle Marshall added 25 points for Oakland and was involved in a double technical foul with Illinois-Chicago's Martell Bailey in the closing minutes. Illinois-Chicago coach Jimmy Collins had to be momentarily restrained from going after the officials after he drew his second technical foul and an ejection a few seconds later.

Armond Williams scored 23 points for Illinois-Chicago, which shot 45.6 percent from the field but had 22 turnovers.
