2004 BCA Classic Starts Sunday

PRINCETON, N.J. (November 13, 2004) - The 2004 BCA Classic is set to begin tomorrow, Sunday, November 14th, and continue through Tuesday, November 16th at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wis. The match-ups and game times are as follows:

November 14

12:00 Noon - South Carolina State vs. Mississippi
2:00 PM - Jacksonville State vs. Air Force
5:30 PM - Illinois State vs. Penn State
7:30 PM - Western Carolina vs. Marquette

November 15

12:00 Noon - Consolation Round
2:00 PM - Consolation Round
5:30 PM - Semifinal Game 1
7:30 PM - Semifinal Game 2

November 16

12:00 Noon - 7th Place Game
2:00 PM - 5th Place Game
5:30 PM - Consolation Game
7:30 PM - Championship Game

Below are some interesting facts about the tournament:

  • The host Golden Eagles return to the hardwood after a 19-12 campaign and a trip to the quarterfinals of the NIT. The team was ranked in the Top 25 for much of last season. Marquette returns All-Conference USA and John Wooden Pre-Season All-America candidate Travis Deiner along with veteran Steve Novak.
  • The 2004 BCA Classic will also feature Mountain West champion and CAA tournament participant Air Force. Air Force achieved its best season in school history, finishing 22-7.
  • The last three BCA Classic tournaments have featured eight teams that have gone on to play in postseason tournaments. The last three champions of the event advanced to the NCAA tournament -- Xavier (2003), Cal (2001), and Wake Forest (2000).
  • Last year's champion, Xavier, advanced to the "Elite Eight" in the 2004 NCAA tournament.
  • James Gordon, former head coach of Milwaukee Washington High School, is the 2004 recipient of the BCA's Images of Excellence Award and will be recognized during halftime of the Marquette game tomorrow night.
  • One of the BCA's goals is to provide postgraduate scholarship opportunities for a maximum of 10 future recipients via the BCA Post-Graduate Ethnic Minority Scholarship for Careers in Athletics program. A portion of the proceeds from the BCA Classic and similar contributions will fund this endeavor.
